Around the holidays we make candies called buckeyes that are rolled balls of peanut butter dipped in chocolate. People refer to individuals from Ohio as buckeyes as well. What is a buckeye and where does it come from? The buckeye tree, which is also, known as Aesculus Glabra is the state tree of Ohio. Sometimes called a horse chestnut the buckeye tree is commonly found throughout the Midwest reaching from Michigan all the way down to isolated areas of Texas and Oklahoma. The area is classified as the temperate deciduous forest biome. A favorite of early Ohio settlers†¦show more content†¦The trees aren’t going to be the tallest in the forest. They are usually 30-40 foot tall and 3-4 foot tall. The trees reach maturity with in 60-80 years of age and most often living upwards of 100 years of age. Like I previously mention the buckeye tree blooms early in the spring. Flowers are a white to yellow-greenish color and form in small clusters. Each flower will produce 1-2 seeds that will produce up to 5 nuts each inside the capsule. The capsule is a pale yellow color that is spiny. The tree is one of the earliest to lose their leaves in the fall turning to a nice yellow and red color before falling off. The buckeye tree has learned to adapt pretty well for survival. Its short stature means that it usually has taller trees in the forest towering over it. While it can grow in the shade it prefers to be in open clusters or along streambeds in moisture rich soil. It has also shown great resistance to fungus and disease. There are only six known diseases that affect the tree. One of the most common and most serious problems that the buckeye tree will experience is leaf scorch. Most likely caused by drought conditions or pollution. The buckeye tree is polygamo-monoecious. The flower cluster s at the base of the branch are fertile and can reproduce while the flowers further up the branch are staminate. In his short story, "The Strangers that Came to Town", Ambrose Flack is showing that true freedom is about being accepted. Ambrose Flack combines the elements of characterization, plot and setting to portray her theme of freedom as acceptance. The story is mainly comprised of two families, the Duvitches and Andy's family. The characterization of the oppressed Duvitches are what insist a deeper message of freedom through acceptance. The most often mentioned Duvitch, is Mr. Duvitch. He is treated as lesser because of his malodorous job which he needs to provide for his family. "It followed that the Syringa Street young, meeting him on the street, sometimes stopped their noses as they passed him bya form of torment all the more acute when Mr. Duvitch had to share it with the children that happened to be with him." (3) A clear sign of unacceptance is shown by the youth of Syringa street as they pass Mr. Duvitch. Mrs. Duvitch is also a target for harsh torment through rumors and judging, though she has rarely stepped foot outside her home. "But this gave rise to the rumor that she was the victim of an obscure skin disease and that every morning she shook scales out of the bed sheet," (3) a description of rumors passed around Syringa Street regarding Mrs. Duvitch. This rumor is an indication of immediate disrespect and unacceptance based solely off the fact that Mrs. Duvitch has not even spoken to these people, but she is already being criticized. The final Duvitches oppressed on Syringa Street are all the children. "Before she could put a stop to it, some of their classmates scoffed at the leaf, lard and black bread sandwiches they ate for lunch, huddled in one corner of the recreation room, dressed in their boiled-out ragpickers' clothes. After school, they headed straight for home, never lingering on the playground," (4) This quote is a description of the Duvitch children's school life where they are meant to get along with the other children. Instead, they are scoffed at and never welcome after school hours by the other children. The oppression by students in this case was done in the form of exclusion and is another form of unacceptance. Mr. and Mrs. Duvitch and all their children are examples of o ppression at the beginning of the book. They later turn into reasons why true acceptance is freedom because of when they are accepted by Andy's family during a supper together. "Overjoyed to have neighbors in his house, he was so full of himself that I was conscious of an invisible stature in him which made him seem quite as tall as Father. He beamed and feasted his eyes on us. Saying very little, he managed to make us feel a great deal and he constantly sought his wife's eyes with glances of delight over the wonder of what was happening," (14) this quote is Mr. Duvitches reaction to when he was finally free because he was accepted by his neighbors. This characterization is what proves acceptance is true freedom. Secondly, there were many incidents in the plot which proved that no matter what the Duvitches did, they were not free because they were not accepted. This was shown one of the times where the Duvitches who pay just like everyone else, are mistreated as a result of unacceptance by tradesmen, "Even the tradesmen to whom the Duvitches gave good money were either curt with them or downright rude," (5) this quote represents that no matter how much the Duvitches paid compared to neighbors, they could not be free because the tradesmen did not accept them. Davis (1998) states that prisons are not providing adequate solution for crime or social issues. The author goes further, claiming that prisons reflect that racial bias and social injustice of the society. Studying American prison population, the author states that â€Å"the political economy of prisons relies on racialized assumptions of criminality – such as images of black welfare mothers reproducing criminal children – and on racist practices in arrest, conviction, and sentencing patterns† (Davis 1998: 2). The defining features of mass incarceration are that it is characterized by comparatively high number of people in prisons. In Reagan’s United States prosecution patterns and conviction rates increased the proportionate representation of African Americans and Hispanics, as well as those from lower socio-economic statuses (Wacquant 2010, p. 74). This was during the New Deal and Great Society, which contributed a lot towards the increasing trend of mass incarcerations, and the adoption of the prison-industrial complex system that emphasized governance through punitive acts (Downes 2001, p. 62). Democracy, Inclusion and Social Policy It is worth noting that mass incarceration in England and Wales led to the economic and social exclusion of people within the prisons. This segregation and incarceration endangered democracy (Sparks and McNeill, 2009). In line with the conflict criminological theory, mass incarceration of offenders who mostly belong to a particular race or class enhanced the structures of oppression and privilege (Van 2007, p. 189). This occurred when mass incarceration gave undue advantage to one group as opposed to another. Today, both in the United States and the United Kingdom, it is evident that people of colour or lower classes are disproportionally overrepresented within the prison-industrial complex. While the mass prison complex created privilege to higher classes, it created a situation whereby the victims were stigmatized, criminalized, and did not enjoy the privileges of democracy and inclusion. The economic and social drivers of mass incarceration are explained by Downes (2006), who co nfirms that there is an inverse relationship between a state’s spending on welfare and imprisonment rates. Mass incarceration also hindered democracy by preventing means through which people could share ideas or communication (Young 2000, p. 208). An incarcerated person experienced political disempowerment and a lack of influence, power, while he became extremely dependent on the prison complex (Travis 2002, p. 19). Despite several attempts of inclusion, provision for rehabilitation, training, and work opportunities, current social policies have not been successful in reinstating the equal representation of lower classes, and the mass incarceration continues. (Reiman 2004, p. 5). Conclusion The above review of publications and research studies, it is evident that the conflict theory accurately explains the emergence of mass incarceration during the reign of Thatcher in the United Kingdom, and Reagan in the United States. Historically, the upper class, that was more advantaged socially, economically and politically created laws and policies that increasingly criminalized the less powerful, creating a policy of segregation. Increased incarceration within the prison-industrial complex removed people who were not wanted.
