Jim Crow was not a real man he was a personal theater character by Thomas D. Rice and an ethnic deprivation in accordance with contemporary white ideas of African American and their culture. Imparted by white democrat dominated state legislators after the reconstruction period in the late 19th centuries. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "What were the 3 Jim Crow laws?" essay for you Create order He was a black character that was played by a white man named Thomas D.Rice which was a white man. It was of a racial segregation in the Southern United States. The play was called Jumped Jim Crow!! Therefore, Jim Crow came about because of a fictional character, however, the impact it had on African Americans was far from fictional as these became laws that governed African Americans. Jim Crow laws were state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. Enacted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by conservative white Democrats-dominated state legislatures after the Reconstruction period, the laws were enforced until 1965(www.history.com).The legal principle of separate, but equal racial segregation was extended to public facilities and transportation, including the coaches of interstate trains and buses. Facilities for African Americans were consistently inferior and underfunded, compared to the facilities for white Americans; sometimes there were no black facilities(www.history.com). As a body of law, Jim Crow institutionalized economic, educational, and social disadvantages for African Americans. Legalized racial segregation principally existed in the Southern states, while Northern racial segregation generally was a matter of fact enforced in housing with private covenants in leases, bank lending-practices, and employm ent-preference discrimination, including labor-union practices(www. history.com). From the 1870s, Southern state legislators, no longer controlled by carpetbaggers and freedmen, passed laws requiring the separating in public transportation and schools. Generally, anyone of ascertainable or strongly suspected black ancestry in any degree was for that purpose a person of colour; the pre-civil War distinction favouring those whose ancestry was known to be mixedparticularly the half-French free persons of colour in Louisianawas abandoned. The segregation principle was extended to parks, cemeteries, theatres, and restaurants in an effort to prevent any contact between blacks and whites as equals. In the South United States, Jim Crow laws and legal racial segregation in public facilities existed from the late 19th century into the 1950s. The civil rights movement was initiated by Southern blacks in the 1950s and 60s to break the prevailing pattern of segregation. In 1954, in its Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Plessy v. Ferguson 1896 decision justification of separate but equal facilities. It declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. In the years following, subsequent decisions struck down similar kinds of Jim Crow legislation. Jim Crow laws were any of enforced racial segregation in the American South between the end of Reconstitution in 1877 and the beginning of the civil rights movement in the 1950s. In its Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896. The U.S. Supreme court ruled that separate but equal facilities for African American did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment, ignoring evidence that the blacks were inferior to those intended to whites. Jim Crow laws sometimes, as in Florida, part of state constitutions mandated the segregation of public schools, public places, and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. The U.S. military was already segregated. President Woodrow Wilson, a Southern Democrat, initiated segregation of federal workplaces at the request of southern Cabinet members in 1913.These Jim Crow laws revived principles of the 1865 and 1866 Black Codes, which had previously restricted the civil rights and civil liber ties of African Americans. Segregation of public (state-sponsored) schools was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education. In some states it took years to implement this decision. Generally, the remaining Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, but years of action and court challenges have been needed to unravel the many means of institutional discrimination. An African-American man drinking at a colored drinking fountain in a streetcar terminal in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 1939 The Jim Crow laws and the high rate of lynchings in the South were major factors which led to the Great Migration during the first half of the 20th century. Because opportunities were so limited in the South, African Americans moved in great numbers to cities in Northeastern, Midwestern, and Western states to seek better lives. Despite the hardship and prejudice of the Jim Crow era, several black entertainers and literary figures gained broad popularity with white audiences in the early 20th century. They included luminaries such as tap dancers Bill Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers, jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and the actress Hattie McDaniel (in 1939 she was the first black to receive an Academy Award when she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind)(www.history.com). African American athletes struggled in life because all of the negativity during the Jim Crow period. White opposition led to their exclusion from most organized sporting competitions. The boxers Jack Johnson and Joe Louis (both of whom became world heavyweight boxing champions) and track and field athlete Jesse Owens (who won four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin) earned fame during this era. In baseball, a color line inst ituted in the 1880s had informally barred blacks from playing in the major leagues, leading to the development of the Negro Leagues, which featured many fine layers(www.history.com). A major breakthrough happened when Jackie Robinson was hired as the first African American to play major league baseball ; he permanently broke the color bar. Baseball teams continued to integrate in the following years, leading to the full participation of black baseball players in the Major Leagues in the 1960s(www.history.com). There was a color change between blacks and whites when on of his teammates put there arm around Robinson during the game and stood there and watched the crowd call them names till they finally relized that blacks and whites we the same just different skin color. So therefor Jim Crow was a big break through with African American life styles and for pro sports.

Growing up in central Ohio there are several things that you will see on a regular basis. One of these items in a buckeye, it is the symbol of the university here in town. Around the holidays we make candies called buckeyes that are rolled balls of peanut butter dipped in chocolate. People refer to individuals from Ohio as buckeyes as well. What is a buckeye and where does it come from? The buckeye tree, which is also, known as Aesculus Glabra is the state tree of Ohio. Sometimes called a horse chestnut the buckeye tree is commonly found throughout the Midwest reaching from Michigan all the way down to isolated areas of Texas and Oklahoma. The area is classified as the temperate deciduous forest biome. A favorite of early Ohio settlers†¦show more content†¦The trees aren’t going to be the tallest in the forest. They are usually 30-40 foot tall and 3-4 foot tall. The trees reach maturity with in 60-80 years of age and most often living upwards of 100 years of age. Like I previously mention the buckeye tree blooms early in the spring. Flowers are a white to yellow-greenish color and form in small clusters. Each flower will produce 1-2 seeds that will produce up to 5 nuts each inside the capsule. The capsule is a pale yellow color that is spiny. The tree is one of the earliest to lose their leaves in the fall turning to a nice yellow and red color before falling off. The buckeye tree has learned to adapt pretty well for survival. Its short stature means that it usually has taller trees in the forest towering over it. While it can grow in the shade it prefers to be in open clusters or along streambeds in moisture rich soil. It has also shown great resistance to fungus and disease. There are only six known diseases that affect the tree. One of the most common and most serious problems that the buckeye tree will experience is leaf scorch. Most likely caused by drought conditions or pollution. The buckeye tree is polygamo-monoecious. The flower cluster s at the base of the branch are fertile and can reproduce while the flowers further up the branch are staminate. The Pursuit of Happiness free essay sample

When I was younger, I would spend every waking minute of daylight that I could outside. I would play in the sun for hours, romping through the woods, catching salamanders in the stream near my house, or spending hours setting up army men for a grand battle, only to be called inside as soon as I finished. I constantly approached my brothers with the phrase â€Å"Wanna Wessel?† still too young to pronounce my â€Å"r’s.† I was a tiny child too, premature by six full weeks and weighing a measly four pounds, six ounces. My parents didn’t even have name for me when I was born. Being the forth and youngest child, I was known as Cuatro for my first few days in the hospital. As my friends grew bigger and I didn’t, it became clear that I probably wouldn’t have a future as a football player or a wrestler. We will write a custom essay sample on The Pursuit of Happiness or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page So, I tried baseball, soccer, and ice hockey, and as it turns out, I wasn’t very good at those either. I was not disheartened though because to me, practice was really just a place for me to see my friends and laugh at each other a few times a week. I never understood how my friends would be so upset just because we lost a game, I was just happy to be there doing it! As long as I was outside, playing in grass, I was happy. When I was ten, going into middle school, I moved from flat, no-trees-in-sight Ohio to the back woods of New Jersey. A place with so many streams and salamanders, I couldn’t believe my luck. That summer I explored ever where, naming landmarks and building hideouts all along my underdeveloped neighborhood. Barefoot and outside was how I was suppose to be, it was so clear to me I never had to think about it. For a kid that was just happy to be doing something, I was easy to please. Somewhere between my foray into middle school and learning what curse w ords meant, I began to lose sight of what had made me truly happy, being outside. Like all children my age, I developed a deep interest in video games, and if you weren’t the one on the football field, you were the one inside playing with Legos or on the computer. I actually started playing lacrosse for the first time when I moved, and still enjoy playing it today, but I was always one of the worst on the field. Towards my teenage years, I followed the crowd. I became someone who desperately needed the acceptance of others, like most teenagers. I listened to the cool music (well, I tried, but it was terrible), bought the cool clothes, and even made fun of the less fortunate kids. I had lost sight of what made me a happy person. Now, as a relatively mature high school senior, I like to think I have gained that sight back. I spend time with people who enjoy things I do, not because it is what they’re doing, but because it is what I want to do. I hike in the Adirondacks multiple times every year and find trails around my house. I have followed my father’s advice of being a leader and not a follower and now, just by being myself and doing what makes me happy, I command the respect of nearly all my piers. I have gained sight of the value of a good education and why I am as lucky as I am to be happy. As long as remain in sight of good morals and values, I know I can, and will accomplish whatever I choose to. As long as I am happy, nothing can touch me. The Pursuit of Happiness free essay sample The pursuit of happiness Whats happiness? A feeling? A state? Why is it so hard to define? Is it because no one is really happy ? From what I know, were happy when we have what we are looking for, according to that, happiness can be defined as a feeling of satisfaction that appears once we achieve a goal, and as humans are by definition eternally dissatisfied, theyll always be running after happiness. This reminds me of the story of the Jar full of gold, that is supposed to be at the feet of each rainbow; children have been running for years to each the feet of the rainbow, and no one ever succeeded. Moreover we usually want many different things, money, health, beauty, youth the list is unlimited, Just like our desires, and there are many dreams well never realize, according to this last idea, is happy only the one who accepts that he cannot have everything, in that sense, happiness will have another definition and happy will mean being satisfied with what we have. We will write a custom essay sample on The Pursuit of Happiness or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Not to be extremist, I would say that being satisfied with what we have will take away our desire to move ahead, and to get more, or to do better; the reason why I think hat the secret of happiness would be to create a balance between all our desires, not to focus on a single objective to avoid obsession and to accept that there are some things well never have and to learn how to live without them. All of this may seem very positive, but this doesnt mean that sorrow is forgotten in my way to see things, sorrow is very important to happiness, as no one can exist without the other. To sum up, I think that the secret of a happy life can be summarized in two rules, avoiding obsession and accepting defeat.
